Question
*Regarding the Blood and the Lymphatic System*
In a famous science fiction movie, a group of scientists in a submarine are miniaturized and injected into a patient's bloodstream. Their mission is to travel to the patient's brain and remove a blood clot that has caused the patient to become comatose.
During their journey to the brain, the shrunken scientists encounter many structures and have some dangerous encounters with them. They have to move quickly to avoid being attacked by the patient's immune system, which recognizes them as foreign objects.
For this discussion, imagine yourself as one of these scientists. Respond to the following questions from the viewpoint of traveling through a patient's bloodstream in a miniaturized submarine.
•What type of blood cell would pose the greatest threat to you? Explain the reason for your choice.
•Imagine that your miniaturized submarine is attacked by a defensive blood cell. Write a short description about the specific type of blood cell that includes its appearance and the attack.
•Besides the defensive blood cells, what other threats would you face from the patient's immune system? Describe a few structures that would attempt to destroy you and the way they would attempt to do this
Explanation / Answer
As we travel through the patients blood stream, the patients immune system recognize us as foreign body ,tried to fight and defeat us.
Before going to our situation lets discuss some of the basic facts. As we all know our blood inludes Red Blood Cells(RBC),White Blood Cells(WBC),Platelets and Plasma.
The White Blood Cells(WBC) are responsible for maintaining the proper immune mechanism of human body. They are produced in the bone marrow. It can be classified as Lymphocyte and Phagocyte.Phagocyte includes
1.Granulocytes
2.Monocytes
3.Macrophage
The lymphocyte includes a)T cells and b) B cells
Lets come back to our journey through the blood stream,
Here,Neutrophils, the granulocytes, are the first-responders to migrate towards the site of infection. They are phagocytes normally found in blood stream(about 45 to 70%).Cell surface receptors allow neutrophils to detect chemical gradients of molecules .
Then the B or T cell came to action. When it comes to face an invader ,it bind to its receptor, the cell divides many times and so creates lots of daughter cells. Each bears receptors that are the same as, or very similar to, those of the parent. Hence, contact with the invader creates from a few B and T cells many more that can react with the invader.
During this division the T and B cells create effector and memory cells. Effector cells act to get rid of the invader, eliminate them from the body. The memory cells survive to protect their host against further infections by the same invader.
In addition to these blood cells, the complement system will also try to fight by working together with the phagocytes.
