ASPI Action Potential Worksheet Name: p9 452-472 Initials Score 1. There are three types of channels present in the plasma membrane of channel and describe when it opens and what is transported across the membrane neurons. Idently each her, it is open 2. Why is the resting membrane potential of a neuron -70mV? What ions are responsible for maintaining the resting membrane potential and where are they located? 3. Answer the following questions regarding graded potentials that occur in the reception region of the neuron a) What is a graded potential? b) What is an EPSP? c) What is an IPSP? d) What is temporal summation? e) What is spatial summation? f) Are EPSPs or IPSPs (or both) summated?Explanation / Answer
1. a. there are 3 types of channels in the plasma membrane i.e. voltage gated channels, mechanical gated and ligand gated channels. the voltage gated channels open or close in response to a variation shift in memrane potential like sodium gated or K gated channels, mechanical gated depends on the mechanical force over the membrane like mechano sensitive ion channels whereas ligand gated channels depends on chemical messanger bound to membrane like GABA receptors .
b. they help in movement of ions across the cell membrane
2. a. The resting membrane potential is evaluated by the concentration gradients of the ions across cell membrane and by the membrane permeability to each type of the ion.the resting mebrane potential is negative because if it be positive the ions will leak and it results to fire an impulse. in addition to this unwanted ions will come inside the cell and it can also fire nerve impulse.
b. The membrane is more permeable to K than that to Na so resting potential is very close to equilibrium potential of the k+ (potential that is generated by k+ if it were only ion in system).
c. the resting membrane potential is created between inside and outside of cell. like inn neurons, k+ and organic anions are present inside the cell in higher concentrations than outside of cell. In contrast,Na + ad Cl - are uually present outside the cell at higher concentrations .
