Question

This is the same worm form the previous problem set. Each side of the worm has one or two neurons which stimulate turning. A neuron that uses the neurotransmitter glutamate is on the right side of the worm, and activity of this neuron causes the worm to turn to the right. The synapse for this neuron also can produce anandamide. Two neurons are on the left side. One of these uses the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and activity of this neuron causes the worm to turn to the left. The other uses GABA, and activity of this neurotransmitter opposes the effects of acetylcholine. When the glutamate and acetylcholine effects are equal, the worm moves straight ahead, and velocity is proportional to the amount of neuron activity. This means that the worm does not move when there is no activity in the acetylcholine and the glutamate synapses, the worm is moving at a moderate rate of speed when there is an intermediate amount of activity in both synapses, and the worm is moving rapidly when there is a high level of activity in both synapses. When acetylcholine and glutamate effects are different, the worm turns to the side with most activity.

Before receiving drugs, the worm is proceeding straight ahead at a moderate speed, meaning that acetylcholine and glutamate signaling are balanced and not saturated. There is a moderate amount of GABA signaling, and no anandamide signaling.

What does the worm do after taking ethanol?
a. turns to the left
b. turns to the right
c. continues straight ahead

What does the worm do after taking a benzodiazepine?
a. turns to the left
b. turns to the right
c. continues straight ahead

What does the worm do after taking a barbiturate?
a. turns to the left
b. turns to the right
c. continues straight ahead

When comparing the effects of most designer cannabinoids with those of THC, what would the result be?
a. turns more after the designer cannabinoid
b. turns less after the designer cannabinoid
c. both drugs cause the same amount of turning.

Before receiving drugs, the worm is proceeding straight ahead at a moderate speed, meaning that acetylcholine and glutamate signaling are balanced and not saturated. However, there is no GABA signaling and substantial anandamide signaling.

What does the worm do after taking ethanol?
a. turns to the left
b. turns to the right
c. continues straight ahead

What does the worm do after taking a CB1 receptor antagonist?
a. turns to the left
b. turns to the right
c. continues straight ahead

Withdrawal symptoms from barbiturates can be fatal.
a. true
b. false

A person ingests 30 ml of alcohol (1 oz or 2 cans of beer) at 7, 8, 9 and 10 pm. Assume this person metabolizes ethanol at a rate of 10 ml every hour, has a body weight of 150 lbs, and total body water content of 45,000 ml. At 10:01 pm, what would be the percentage alcohol in body water (which equals percent alcohol in blood)?
a. 0.07%
b. 0.10%
c. 0.18%
d. 0.20%
e. 0.27%

Explanation / Answer

1.b.turns to right.

2.a.turns to left.

3.a.turns to left.

4.a.turns more after the designer cannabinoid.

5.b.turns to right.

6.a.turns to left.

7.a.true.

8.a.alcohol.

9.alcohol and tobacco.

10.It can be calculated as,

Blood alcohol concentration= 150÷body weight × ethanol content ÷ 50 × ounces consumed × 0.025

=150÷150×30÷50×1×0.025

=0.015.

So nearly answer is a.0.07%
