For our assignment this week, examine the Universal Intellectual Standards as described in our readings. Select one of these standards, and describe how using that standard has helped you in your:

Then, in a paragraph each, describe how that standard has helped you in your work life, in your school life, and in your personal life. Each paragraph should contain at least one example.

Ans: Universal Intellectual Standards are the standards which are applied to thinking which helps in ensuring the quality of the reasoning in some matter or dilemma conditions. There are seven Universal Intellectual Standards which includes clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance, depth, breadth, logic. Clarity means elaborating further on some point by giving an example to exemplify what we mean. While accuracy is the means of checking whether the point is really true by verifying or testing it. Precision means being more specific. It is like giving details or being exact. Relevance means how a point is related to the problem and how it helps with the issue. While depth describes the the most difficult factors which creates the problem. It shows the complexities and how to deal with them. Breadth means looking at a problem from all perspectives. And logic defines whether an argument does make sense together. It strings together on the line of evidence.
From all the universal intellectual standards, the standard which could be closely related to work life, school life and personal life is precision. Precision is normally be used and applied in my work life, school life, and even in my personal life. Precision is an important universal intellectual standard because precision means being more specific. It is like giving details or being exact and it helps in clarifying the situations which leads to a better understanding and sooner or later to the best results. As, I always like to double check the information before taking any decision so that there will be no room for any mistakes.
In my work life, precision has been a great tool for achieving success. While I was in the military I always used precision in order to make sure I understood what the task of the mission was. I think that without precision in the military there would be a lot of confusion and misunderstanding which will eventually lead to incompetence.
During my school days, I used to play basketball. Precision helped a lot in not only improving my game but alos to understand the game in better manner. If the basketball player does not make many baskets, but always strikes the same portion of the rim, he has a high degree of precision.
Similarly, in personal life if get more precise in the language we use we can prevent all kinds of miscommunications. This not only benefits our relationships but also our work and family relationships as well. Because when we use clearer language it can also help to prevent misinterpretations.
