DISCUSSION TOPIC 1 Skin and Keratin The two topics for discussion this unit will center on Skin Characteristics and Exocrine Glands. The epidermal layer of your skin is a tough coating., similar to roofing on a home, of overlapping dead cells. These cells are continually being sloughed off and replaced from below. Why is the outer layer of skin filled with keratin? What function does it serve? If all people have the same number of melanocytes in their skin, how do we explain the differences in color among the various races? DISCUSSION TOPIC 2

Explanation / Answer

1.The outer layer of skin is keratinized to form a tough water proof covering. It serves as a protective layer against microbes and pathogens and also protects the underlyi g tissues from injury and mechanical stress. It also functions as a tough and waterproof barrier. Keratinization occurs over the those surfaceseeking which are exposed to abrasion ,mechanical stress and drying.

2. Skin colour in humans is a polygenic quantative triat controlled by many genes. It is the cumulative effect of these different genes which produce different skin colours in humans.
