there are no clear diagnostic criteria in place for specigying whether someone has a mental illness or not. it was conducted to validate psychiatric diagnosis. The study was done in two parts:

1. The experimenters inlcuding Rosenhan himself to psychiatric facilities, they pretended to hallucinated to get admissions in the facility.

2. in the second part, he challenged to detect pseudopatients among the 193 patients. the challenged facility concluded with pseudopatients where Rosenhan hadnt sent any pseudopatients- all were psychological ill.
