Scenario # 1 : Wholesome Hamburger Company
Suppose you work for the Wholesome Hamburger Company that owns a 100 fast food restaurants in California.

You know that it takes:

12 gallons of water to produce a head of lettuce,
2 gallons for one walnut, and
468 gallons of water to produce a pound of chicken.
You discuss this with the executives in your firm and they tell you that the way water is allocated by government, the company does not incur any additional expense: water will remain very cheap for business. The head of the company is soliciting ideas for its strategic plan for the future.

Scenario # 2 : Chicken International Group
You are the CEO of a chicken-processing company. The Vice President of marketing informs you that if you label your chicken as “free range” you can charge 20% more and greatly improve profit margins.
You find out that all that needs to be done to legally use the term “free range” is to open the door to the hen house for 5 minutes a day. This provides the chickens with access to the outdoors when, in fact, very few chickens will wander out when the door is open for 5 minutes. Moreover, the term “free range” may be used regardless of space per chicken, number of chickens, or amount of time spent outside.

Explanation / Answer
Scenario 1
1. The country C is experiencing severe drought and the government has declared to use water less due to the water scarcity. When considering the current situation the WHC company operations can fall into an ethical dilemma in relation to the usage of water for its business operations. Since it requires nearly 2500 gallons of water for its production process each day, the water scarcity can become an issue.
When the public is suffering from the water scarcity as they are not getting sufficient water for their daily activities, the company WHC taking 2500 gallons of water daily for their fast food production can be considered as an unethical activity.
But when considering the sustainability and the survival of the business operations of WHC, considering the water scarcity and reducing its production process can impact the company’s future. This factor put the company into an ethical dilemma situation.
2. Some of the alternatives or the actions which the company WHC can adopt during this situation are mentioned below.
3. The company should think of the alternatives which I have mentioned in the above questions as it is obligated to the society in which it is operating. If the organization operates in the same manner through using early 25 gallons of water every day the public will get affected in some way or the other. Hence through adopting ay of the alternatives mentioned the organization highlights its commitment towards the society and the situation of the social living. Since it is a fast food restaurant and it is a luxury product or a product which can be avoided by the public spending so much of water for its production can be considered as unethical activity under such a situation.
4. The above mentioned course of action focus on the social responsibility of the organization and also the sustainability of the organization. Being ethical if the organization stops its production process, the future of the organization, the profit, the income of the staff members working in the WHC will get affected. During such a scarce situation if the employees losses their job or doesn’t receive their salary, they will have to go through a very bad situation.
Hence through focusing on reducing the production process it can focus on limiting the water usage required for production and also can protect the interest of the employees. These recommendations or alternatives mentioned above highlights the commitment of the organization towards the society as well as towards its stake holders.
