Question
Concept Check 1. A sixty year old man presented with leg and ankle edema and ascites caused by right-sided heart failure secondary to COPD. His edema and ascites resulted because: select of an increased total blood volume and cardiac output. neffectual pumping of the right ventricle caused blood to back up into the systemic circulation. a decrease in pulmonary resistance resulted in excess blood being pumped into the lungs overfilling and distending the systemic vessels. Cor pulmonale is best defined as: 3. Patients with right-sided heart failure suffer from an increased total blood volume that adds stress to an already failing heart. The physiological process that would account for this increased blood volume is:
Explanation / Answer
Answer for Question 1
The edema and ascites are resulted because of increased blood volume and cardiac output.
COPD is a lung disease. shortness of breath or decreased oxygen supply to the lungs. the lungs are involved purification of blood with the exchage of carbondioxide with oxygen. normally right side heart receive deoxygenated blood and send it to lungs for reoxygenation. In case of COPD less oxygen supply to the lung tissues. To compensate this heart is forced to work hard to pump blood through diseased lungs, that icreases blood volume and cardiac output. all these increses the pulmonary hypertension. pumonary hypertension is one of major cause for right sided heart failure.
