Prostrate specific antigen (PSA) is a glycoprotein enzyme produced by the epithelial cells of the prostrate gland. PSA is produced by both cancerous and noncancerous tissues of the prostrate. PSA is present in small amount in the blood of normal individuals . Elevated levels of PSA indicates prostrate cancer. PSA can also be elevated due to enlarged or inflammed prostrate. It may also be elevated in case of infection of the prostrate.

PSA testing with a cut off of 4 ng/ml has sensitivity of 67-80%. The specificity of PSA test is 93.3%.
