Question

1. (14 points) The data below was taken from a previous ANS215 class several years ago. Calculate the means, variances, standard deviations, and correlation coefficient. In addition, based on this data, if a student attended 35 lectures, what would you predict her grade to be? Number of classes | Grade (%) attended 20 39 39 38 32 36 39 36 21 58 92 98 76 74 86 89 87 89 2. (10 points) Three characteristics in beef cattle-body weight, fat content and tenderness -are measured and the following variance components are estimated nent Body weight Fat content Tenderness 45 25 12 10 42 0 64. a. Calculate the broad-sense and narrow-sense heritabilities for each trait. b. In this particular population, which trait would respond best to artificial selection? Why? 3. (6 points) In a population of tomato plants, mean fruit weight is 57 g and h is 0.34. Predict the mean weight of the progeny if tomato plants whose fruit averaged 84 g were selected from the original population and interbred to produce progeny

Explanation / Answer

1) The mean is calculated by adding up all the values and dividing it by the total number. Variance is calculated according to the formula summation of (x - mean)^2 / (n-1). Standard deviation is the square root of variance.

Therefore, for number of classes attended, the mean value is 33.4, variance is 51.6 and standard deviation is 7.18. For grades, the mean value is 81, variance is 178 and standard deviation is 13.34.

r = ((X - My)(Y - Mx)) / ((SSx)(SSy))
r = 414 / ((464.4)(1602)) = 0.48

The correlation coefficient is calculated to be 0.48.
