It use to be believed that individuals being treated for a chronic illness such as cancer, were often told by their doctor to rest and reduce their physical activity. This is good advice if movement causes pain, rapid heart rate, or shortness of breath. However new studies have shown that exercise is not only safe and possible during cancer treatment, but it can improve how well you function physically and your quality of life.

Too much rest can lead to loss of body function, muscle weakness, and reduced range of motion. Many cancer care teams are urging their patients to be as physically active as possible during cancer treatment. There still isn’t a lot of information available concerning  exercise and physical activity affect your recovery from cancer, or their effects on the immune system. But regular moderate exercise has been found to have health benefits for the person with cancer.

Exercises have been shown to improve cardiovascular fitness, muscle strength, depression etc, and several quality of life factors in cancer survivors. The benefits of exercise for cancer patients can help in following ways-

1. Improve balance.

2.Lower the risk of heart disease.

3.lessen neusea.

4. Weight control.

5. Improve blood flow, etc.

For cancer patient, the American college of sports medicine supports the following guidelines-

1. Take part in regular physical activity.

2. Aim to exercise at least 150 minutes per week.

3. Pay close attention to your body response.

4. Include strength training exercise at least two days per week.

5. Avoid injury.
