Definition of stratified epithelium is many layers of epithelial cells arranged one upon another. A single layer is on basement membrane, rest all lies one upon another .

Transitional epithelium is a specialized stratified epithelium which has the capacity to change its shape. Hence the name transitional epithelium. This is seen in urinary bladder, ureters, uterus. So it's found in organs where stretch is seen. So this epithelium function to accommodate any change in volume of liquid by changing its shape of cells. This kind of epithelium is connected to each other by tight junction so that it generates tensile force to accommodate fluctuations in volume
