ndelstahding Critical Thinking and Application Questions REVIEW 1 A person who visits the eye doctor is often given eye drops containing the drug atropine to dilate the pupils. A side effect of this drug is paralysis of the ciliary muscle, an effect called cycloplegia. Will a person with cycloplegia have difficulty with near vision or distance vision? Explain. 2 The disease macular degeneration is characterized by a gradual loss of vision as a result of degeneration of the macula lutea. Considering the type of cells located in the macula lutea, which type of vision do you think a sufferer of macular degeneration would lose? Why? 15 3 LASIK, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure on the eye that millions of people have undergone to improve visual acuity. It involves the use of a laser is to reshape the cornea in individuals suffering from astigmatism, near-sightedness (myopia), or far-sightedness (hyperopia). How could changing the shape of the cornea affect one's visual acuity? Explain why infectious otitis media (inflammation of the middle ear) may result in a simulta (inflammation of the throat). neous pharyngitis 4Explanation / Answer
Question 1
Answer
The person with cycloplegia induced by atropine causes The difficulty in near vision.
Normally ciliary body is mainly responsible for accommodation. The contraction and relaxation of ciliary muscles provide accommodation of varying distances. The contraction of these muscles produced by binding of acetylcholine to muscarinic receptors (M3). Atropine produces inhibit the activity of Acetylcholine.
During near vision the ciliary muscles enable changes shape of lens to focuse light. At that time the ciliary muscles contracts, move and moves toward the line of eye. There by releases the tension and this causes the lens have more focus on near vision. The administration of prevents ciliary muscle contraction so they can get difficulty in near vision.
Question 2
answer
Loss of central vision
The central portion of retina is called macula. This is responsible for recording collecting the detailed images to the field of vision and send the information to brain through the optic nerve, thereby it will give the clear central vision.
So degeneration of these cells leads to development of loss of central vision. In advanced condition leads to blindness
