4.During inspiration the inhaled oxygen reaches the alveoli. The alveoli are in close proximity to capillaries. Both the layer of alveoli and the capillaries are single celled with thin membrane. These structure characteristics help in oxygen reaching from the alveoli to the capillaries which unite together and leave the lungs as pulmonary vein carrying oxygenated blood to the left atrium of heart. The left atrium pumps it to its ventricle and from there the aorta distributes the oxygenated blood to the entire body.
