Explanation / Answer
MEMO - MELANOMA CASES ON THE RISE.
Suj: alarming rise in melanoma cases detected in the region.
it has come to my attention that in the past 2 years there has been an alarming rise in melanomas detected especially among young individuals in the area. An direct etiology as explained is in exposure of UV rays to the integumentary organ. As such, most dermatologists say that the epidermis and dermis both are damaged and results in the uncontrolled proliferation of melanocytes resulting in melanoma. Many of the patients are initially asymptomatic and these tumors are mistaken for moles. However with secondary changes like rapid growth, pain, change in color and change in consistency from soft to hard or ulcerations on the surface, they can be easily diagnosed as invasive melanomas. Most onco-pathologists and medical oncologists who have reviewed these cases also state that the pathogenesis of the disease lies in the extreme exposure of fair skin to harsh UV rays of the sun. Few patients have also shown metastasis to organs like liver and brain ultimately resulting in death. A lot of ignorance regarding this tumor and its overlapping features with the common mole has resulted in delayed diagnosis and treatment. Also the financial burden that families pay are high.
Hence, knowing the etiolgy, it is now upto the health bodies to educate people who may be at risk to UV exposure on the ill effects. A lot of effort has to be made in prevention techniques, as this risk factor is modifiable. Health camps and other promotional efforts in schools, colleges and workplaces will have to be aggresively pursued in and around areas in which the largest number of cases are seen. A panel of dermato- oncologists are also available to have effective discussions with communities effected and guide in proper prevention and identification of risk cases. Circulation of medical material regarding the same will also have a good impact on creating knowledge regarding the disease.
I sincerely hope, that in the coming years are efforts will be noticeable with respect to decrease in number of melanoma cases. Kindly circulate the same.
Thanking you,
