Knowing how to lower the risk of pancreatic cancer is important to me because my grandfather was diagnosed with it while it was already in the late stages. There are two main types of pancreatic cancer which deals with the two types of cells found in the pancreas, the endocrine and exocrine cells. The more common endocrine pancreatic cancer typically occurs when the cells in pancreas—found behind the stomach—begin to grow excessively and uncontrollably. Diagnosing pancreatic cancer in its early stages is difficult because the exocrine cells don’t secrete hormones, therefore exhibiting no signs or symptoms. Although early detection is difficult and there are no evidence-based studies on the prevention of pancreatic cancer, there are ways to lower the risk of getting it. Maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, limiting alcohol consumption, and reducing exposure to carcinogens are factors which help to lower that risk.
