Question
-What are some physiological or pathological conditions that my influence the observed reflex response of say a Patellar or Achilles deep tendon reflex? How might these change the response? Be able to describe the changes that an upper vs lower motor neuron lesion may have on reflex response.
-What are some strategies that may enhance or improve one's reflex response of the patellar tendon? How might these be helpful when assessing a patient?
-How would you calculate nerve conduction velocity if info was given?
Explanation / Answer
Physiological responces that influence the observed reflux responce is the physiological responce to mitigate COLD.
Pathological conditions that my influence the observed neuron is
The lesion in the lower motor neuron affects the nerve fiber which is travelling from the anterior horn of the spinal cord.
The lesion in the upper motor neuron affects the brain or the spinal cord.
These upper and lower lesions leads to the conditions like the
Patellar tendon reflux is one of the tendon reflux. These is the only tendon reflux that can be examined.
The patellar reflux is a clinical example of the monosynaptic reflux arc.
To increase or to enhance the reflux responce of the patellar tendon REFLUX HAMMER is used. A large responce can also be seen when the patien is occupied with the maneuver. These strategies mighth be helpfull when assesing the patient where the patient clenches the teeth.
NERVE CONDUCTION VELOCITY: The nerve conduction velocity is defined as the speed at which the electrochemical impulse propogates down the neuron pathway.
We can calculate the nerve conduction velocity by the following
