Just like the Olympics, the World Cup comes around only every four years. And just like the Olympics, the athletes prepare as only elite athletes know how to do. France’s highly regarded national team, Les Bleus, went to the South African World Cup with a motto, “All together for a new dream.” However, from its first competitive match through its final defeat, the team lived more of a nightmare.

On paper, France’s team was considered one of the world’s best. It should have been in prime position to walk away with the World Cup championship. However, the team performed badly on the field, and its behavior was even worse off the field. A top player was sent home for insulting the coach. The team captain hinted that there was a traitor in the team’s midst after the coach/player dispute was leaked to the press. And after its first match ended in a draw and its second match in a loss to Mexico, team players refused to participate in a training session in a protest against their bosses. The final straw was the team’s defeat in its last match by the host country team. So much for the dream. What went wrong with this team?

I used to work in a company selling online services- Team of 15 sales executives under 2 Team leaders, reporting to a Sales Manager, who further used to report to Group Manager.

Issue was: Suddenly team sales dropped one month, even after performing as top 3 teams in the company in last 6 months. Individual sales targets and team targets were not achieved. This affected next month sales target too, team could achieve 70% of target, as a result of demotivation and loss of incentives of last month. Whole team and managers were further de motivated as how to bring things back on track.

Reasons to fail:

Context:

Missing of right leadership support in such a situation. A Manager needs to come up with a solution, have a word on reducing target or service complaints or any other, rather than shouting on junior. A corrective action from manager was missing.

Composition:

Tasks should have been divided better or should have been handled with a more of team spirit. Senior sales guys and managers should help in sales conversions for junior ones, keeping up the morale and spirit. This did not happen, and in turn, whole team demoralized and went down for 2 months.

Process Factor:

A common and meaningful purpose was becoming difficult to achieve, due to excessive stress and sales pressure on each member. Hence, people lost focus on how to persuade customer with better ideas and solutions and of any new ideas to lure customers.
