Question
A male patient enters your office. He is in his mid-30s and in decent physical shape. He complains about being tired and seems to be gaining some weight, while not eating more than normal. He also describes being cold all the time. You decide to perform a blood test and receive the following results.
After reviewing his results, you come to a conclusion. What might be wrong with this patient and how does this diagnosis correlate with the symptoms presented by the patient?
Hormone TSH Prolactin ACTH Values 0.04 mlU/L 18 ng/mL 57 pg/mL 0.9 pg/ml 4 pg/mL 21 g/dL 2 Calcitonin Cortisol 9Explanation / Answer
TSH: The normal range of thyroid stimulating harmone is 0.04 mlU/L that is in between 0.35- 5.5.
PROLACTIN: The normal range is 18ng/mL.
ACTH: The normal range of adrenocortico tropic harmone is 10-50pg/ml.
The value of ACTH is increased in the patient. The overproduction of the ACTH leads to the over activity of pituitary gland. These leads to the tumor production in the lungs.
ADH: The ADH level is 1-5 pg/ml. The antidiuretic harmone level if decreased means it cause too much excretion of water from the kidney.
Over production of urine leads to dehydration and fall in blood vessel. The dehydration and over production of urine is a symptom in diabetes insipidus.
CALCITONIN: The calcitonin normal value is less than 8.8 pg/ml
CORTISOL: The normal value of Cortisol is 10-20micro gram/dL.
The cortisol value increased means it leads to hypertension and high blood sugar, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
The symptoms indicates that he is having the diabetes mellitus 2 and hypertension.
