Question

EAP 1686 Reading Exam Reading the following passages and answer the questions PASSAGE IV A military commander's total concern must be to accomplish the assigned mission. The commander cannot permit mercy, kindness, or humanity to jeopardize or delay the task. Only occasionally in war time can a commander permit such considerations. Once, such a consideration occurred near the end of WWII. Driving north toward Manila, Philippines, General Joseph Swing's 11th air borne "Angels" were racing the 1* Cavalry Division, which was driving south, to occupy the capital city and enabled McArthur to keep his promise to return. But with his troops less than 50 miles south of Manila, Swing learned that 2,100 American prisoners were to be executed within two days by their Japanese captors. The prison was on a lake shore 25 miles behind Japanese lines. Defended by 25,000 troops within an hours drive, it was inaccessible by conventional attack. A purely military commander would have written off the 2,100 American nurses, teachers, missionary and their families. Even if rescued without casualties and delays, the internees would add only dead weight to the fighting team. Yet Swing pooled short the Manila drive to conduct the impossible Los Banos rescue. First, Philippine guerillas infiltrated the jungle near the prison. Next, a regimental team run all night long to drive a wedge isolating the prison from the Japanese soldiers who might race to defend it. Finally, F-Company, combat-ready in parachutes, bordered C-47s. Simultaneously, D-Battery Parachute Antennary mounted amphibious tractors to attack from the lake Intelligence had reported that at 0700 hours every morning, the Japanese guards took calisthenics en-mass the adjacent parade ground, their rifles neatly tacked at the edge of the shoes. At exactly 0700 hours on February 23, the parachute company dropt from the sky, the guerrillas spread into action, the amphibious group landed and the regimental wedge bristled to drive back Japanese reinforcement. Perfectly coordinated, the raid came off exactly as planned. Almost 300 Japanese guards died, and within minutes, the 2,100 internees climbed into the amphibian tractors for transportation to safety. Neither the prisoners nor rescuers suffered a single casualty or serious injury Few Americans have ever heard of the Los Banos rescue, for on the very same day marines from IWO-GIMA raised the American flag in the tableau that has become the Corps monument, and their achievement dominated the news. The 11th airborne paratroopers do not begrudge the marines their well-deserved recognition for their well accomplished task. Every February 23, all over America, a few aging paratroopers meet in groups of two or three to have dinner in remembrance of their magnificent mission and the time when a military commander placed humanity before the mission.
