Answer: a. The diagnosis is that the patient is suffering form Liver Cirrhosis (also referred to as hepatic fibrosis).
b. Consequence of the disease. Liver cirrhosis is characterised by development of a hard scar (fibrosis), and several regenerative nodules in liver. Portal hypertension and liver insufficiency are the two main consequences of the disease that get implicated in varied other effects as:Accumulation of fluid in abdominal cavity (Ascites), Edema of legs, and even upper gastrointestinal tract bleeding,
c. Abdominal swelling is referred to as Ascites. As stated above, portal hypertension is one of the major consequences of liver cirrhosis. Owing to liver fibrosis and nodule developement in liver, blood flow in the liver is obstructed, which leads to increase in pressure within portal vein. Enhanced pressure in portal vein facilitates accumulation of fluid in abdominal cavity evident as abdominal swelling.
