Explanation / Answer

1. The developmental psychologist study human growth and devlopment through the various stafes of the life of a human. It helps us to understand how people adapt , mature and learn. It helps us to understand human beings and is very important. Development psychologists working in the applied fields like health care facilities help to assess, evaluate and treat people living with developmental disorders. There is a normal course in which a person develops like first every kid starts crawling and then walking slowly and then gradually ge starts doing other activities like running, cycling, swimming etc. some discrepency can be accepted and is ussual in this process like some people start reading at the age of 5 and others start reading clearly at 6 or 7. Most of the early lifetime disorders i.e. disorders in a child have their basis on developmental problems like autism, attention deficiency hyperactive disorder and seperation anxiety disorder etc. These problems are more than the accepted discrepency and is termed as a lack in the developmental processes of a human being. These disorders include delayed development and is also termed as abnormal development. To keep a track of the abnormal development and to assess and evaluate it properly it becomes neccessary to know what should be termed as abnormal development. As stated avoce their is a normal course of development for all the humans and some discrepency with this is considered normal but after a certain point it can be called abnormal development and this needs to be evaluated assessed and treated well. Also the childhood psychological disorders can effect our development processes largely and hence the consequences of this disorder need to be taken care of and precented or minimised before while treating the disorders. Hence for both the above reasons it is important to understand and have knowledge of the normal course of human development while learninv about the childhood psychological disorders.

2. The critical period is a maturational phase in the lifespan of a person. In this the nervous system becomes sensitive to certain stimuli in the environment and need specific stimuli inorder to learn some functions otherwise ut would be difficult or nearly inpossible to develop certain functions later in life. Functions like vision and acquiring ones first language develop during the critical period only. The confirmation of the critical stages of the vrain development can be confirmed by showing that dter a certain time the functions stops getting correlated with the age of a person and the function doesnt develop further. These have been tested by the psychologist and certain critucal development stages of a human brain have been found our. 2 of these are-

A. Vision- the neurons responsible for the development of vision in the brain of a mammal develop after birth based on the stimuli received fromeye. According to an experiment by David H Hubel and Torsten Wiesel in 1963 showed that a cat whose one eye was sewen from birth itself to the 3 months of age developed the vision in the open eye only. Because the vision critical period has been elapsed it was difficult for the cat to develop vision in the closed eye. The sane was done to an adult or fully grown cats byt they did not show the impairment of the vision in the closed eye as they acquired it in both the eyes during the critical period itself. Further they also found the cortisol responses present in the binocular vision. They found that there was no active cell in the cortex. The responses were also slow moving or fast fatiguing. They have developed a normal binocular cision. It also happens in case of humans when the child is born with visual impairment by birth whuch can be operated later but the vision diesnt develop dully by that as the critical period has elapsed. hence its important them to be treated after the birth so that they develop a normal full vision.

B. Auditory- studies have supported the correlation between the development of the auditory stumuli during the postnatal stages to the development of development of the auditory functioning. The reports frin tge deaf children and animals in a study which got a cochlear transplant show that ir is subject to the early developmental sensitive period. Although ut is seen that the auditory functions do develop after the critical period also but some sounds do not develop after that critical period. Hence they are important for the development of brain for the functions for connctions. Early auditory environment enhances the structural development and response specificity of a primary auditory cortex.
