Question
Sexual orientation has been defined as, “Whom one is attracted to for personal and intimate relationships,” whereas gender identity has been defined as, “How one identifies for male/female purposes.” These issues push a lot of buttons in society and the workplace. In the early days of HIV/AIDS in the workplace, individuals were discriminated against and sued under the Americans with Disabilities Act for being treated differently either because of having the virus/disease, or being regarded as might having the virus/disease. Discuss how current issues related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity may be impacted by the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Explanation / Answer
American with diasabilities Act of 1990 protected people who are mentally and physically disable from discrimination by people on both public places and employment opportunities. People with HIV/AIDS are also covered under disability. The sexual orientation of people have changed recently in major scale like male are attracted towards male female are attracted towards female. But one thing is clear that sexual orientation and gender have no role in discrimination towards HIV affected people. Both are independent and not related to each other.
