Explanation / Answer
Diagnosis & Identified Symptoms - Dissociative Fugue
Category of Disorders - Dissociative Disorder
Other Disorders in this Category - Dissociative identity disorder, Dissociative amnesia, Depersonalization disorder, Other specified dissociative disorder, and unspecified dissociative disorder [According to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual - DSM]
Etiology of diagnosed disorder - Exact cause is unknown, but Dissociative Fugue is linked to high stress and anxiety. Especially if the stress or anxiety is due to experiencing or witnessing of traumatic events by that person. Dissociative Fugue also seems to be linked to substance abuse.
Perspective - Dissociative Fugue is considered to be relatively rare when compared to other disorders of same category. Its tendency seems to increase when there is a traumatic event like natural disaster or wars, etc. The outlook for this disorder is good, as it goes away own its own after several days or months. Most Fugues are brief, however without treatment there are chances of additional episodes in future.
Treatment - There is no medication to directly treat dissociative fugue, but medications for anxiety, psychotic medicines and depression can be administered. Psychotherapy works best for this disorder. Sometimes it is combined with hypnosis or drug-induced states to help remember forgotten events or the event that is underlying cause for stress or anxiety.
Reason for selecting treatment - Since there are no direct causes for this disorder, there is no pharmacotherapy available to treat this disorder. Only way to tackle it is by treating the underlying stress or trauma. Psychotherapy works best because it uses communication to find out conflicts, dysfunctional thinking, dysfunctional behaviors, and underlying problems.
