Q1. The study talks about childhood obesity and how it is increasing all over the world. The area of development that I am interested is in how to control this problem with various techniques and interventions starting from the government schemes to parental help. The involvement of schools and teachers in promoting healthy lifestyle is another area in which development is needed. Keeping the focus on the problem and factors promoting obesity, interventions are being developed but it is an ongoing process. Sustainability of interventions is the main issue to promote healthy lifestyle among children.
Q2. The specific question that we are interested is in "why childhood obesity is increasing and how is it affecting the psychological, social and physical wellbeing of the child?" as well as "how important it is to sustain the various interventions being used to control obesity?"
Q3. The stage of development it is addressing is infancy, pre-school and middle childhood till adolescence. The report presented by NHANES for the year 2007-2008 estimated that 16.9% of children and adolescent in the age group of 2-19 years were obese. Obesity is a problem which is being seen in infants as well as school going children, which is the main age for its onset passing through teenage age as well. It is addressing the physical, social, psychological wellbeing and personality problems in the child.Lack of physical activity also plays an important role in obesity.Children who are obese have a negative body-image, which leads to lower self-esteem.They feel socially discriminated and stigmatized by their peers and adults.Obese children have high risk of cardiovascular diseases, high blood pressure, and increased cholesterol levels.
Q4. The title is childhood obesity:a global public health crisis which addressed the problem of obesity in children all over the world including underdeveloped and developed countries as well as what factors lead to this problem and the interventions that can be used to control this problem.
Q5. The authors are Sameera Karnik and Amar Kanekar. The study was conducted from 1999-2011 and published in 2012.In order to collect materials for this review a detailed search of CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC, Academic Search Premier databases was carried out for the time period 1999-2011. Its a long term study carried out over a span of 12-13 years.
Q6. For this article.material was collected from archives of previous years and they were studied to come to a conclusion regarding childhood obesity. The statistics were studied to find out that obesity has been a problem ffrom over a decade and has become a public health crisis, not just in the United States but all over the world.
Q7.The method used was collecting data from previous articles and statistics from the archives and drawing conclusions regarding the prevelance of the problem and its effects on children along with suggesting interventions to control it.In order to collect materials for this review a detailed search of CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC, Academic Search Premier databases was carried out for the time period 1999-2011. A Boolean search strategy was used, where the key words entered for search were “factors” and “childhood obesity” “interventions” and “governmental actions” and “economic problems” in differing orders were used to extract studies for this narrative review.
Q8. The conclusion was that childhood obesity has become a public health crisis, not just in the United States but all over the world over the years and this problem can be reduced by educating children and parents about healthy nutrition and encouraging them to be physically active. There are effective interventions and government policies for prevention and control of childhood obesity. Sustainability of these interventions is a key factor, so that children can adopt these healthy behaviors as a lifelong practice and have a healthy life. This will lead to a nationwide healthy future for the kids.
Q9. The results aint surprising because obesity has been a growing problem for so many years. Every country is experiencing it and every country is taking possible alternatives to help curb it. The governments, schools, hospitals, parents and children all have been fighting this problem for so long but still not enough is being done.
