Zimberoff and Hartman described DID(Dissociative Identity Disorder) as a defocusing of awareness, creating a failure to integrate information about one’s personal identity, memories, sensations, and state of consciousness into a unified whole.

While according to Ludwig, DID is a dissociation representing basic mechanism underlying a wide variety of altered forms of consciousness, including, hypnotic trance, multiple personality, spirit possession states and highway hypnosis.

According to Ludwig, dissociative identity disorder isn't a pathology but only dissociation that is also seen as a mechanism for a varied altered forms of consciousness.
