Zimberoff and Hartman described DID(Dissociative Identity Disorder) as a defocusing of awareness, creating a failure to integrate information about one’s personal identity, memories, sensations, and state of consciousness into a unified whole.
While according to Ludwig, DID is a dissociation representing basic mechanism underlying a wide variety of altered forms of consciousness, including, hypnotic trance, multiple personality, spirit possession states and highway hypnosis.

According to Ludwig, dissociative identity disorder isn't a pathology but only dissociation that is also seen as a mechanism for a varied altered forms of consciousness. These range from non pathological states such as highway hypnosis state and trance state. Also Ludwig touches spiritual and religious states of altered consciousness such as spirit possession states.
