Complete Case 1.2 in the book.(the   scrren shots above are from the book use them)

About one half to one page in length is fine. The main focus will be your perceived weaker areas.

You will bring a hard copy to class to discuss this case with a guest from the industry.

This will be a great opportunity for you to determine how you can improve your managerial abilities.

Case Study 1.2: Do You Have What It Takes to Be a Hospitality Manager? First of all, everyone who is customer oriented (i.e., likes the idea of serving others) and is willing to work hard (i.e pay your dues), has what it takes to be a hospitality manager. The degree of your success will be determined by how you meet the expectations-the job specifications (the characteristics) established by the company that you work for. Based on how your abilities match the firm's job specifications and the effort you put in, your potential could be anywhere from managing a small restaurant to being the general manager of a luxury hotel with a thousand employees or somewhere in between. Hospitality managers must have a variety of skills to be successful-the job specifications of a particular company The list included here is organized according to the manager's four generic responsibilities (plan, organize, direct and control) and the various personal characteristics necessary to carry them out. A good test of whether you are currently prepared for management in this industry would be to review characteristics on the list and determine whether you have strengths or weaknesses in them. The key here is to be objective. We all hav weaknesses. The next step is to determine how you can maximize your strengths and either correct your weaknesses or find a business with managers that have strengths in your weaker areas and conversely, you have strengths in areas where others are weaker. You maximize our strengths by selecting challenges for which you are prepared. An important note here is that we are all prepared to do more than we have ever done before, If an opportunity comes up that you do not have a great deal of experience with, but you feel that through clear thinking and hard work that you can accomplish it, go for it. Rarely, will a supervisor ask a manager (maybe you) to do something they do not think they are ready to do Sometimes you can compensate for your weaknesses by focusing on your strengths. For example, all managers are not inspiring leaders who can motivate employees to walk through walls for them. A non-charismatic manager can make up for this deficiency by having an honest and caring attitude toward employees and being supportive of the hospitality firm's standards. This compensatory strategy can often succeed better than charisma, because it is more likely to influence employees over the long-term

Explanation / Answer

Some of the managerial skills that I think would be my strengths would include - communication skills, listening skills, critical thinking, patience and decision making. In order to maximise each of these fields, it is necessary to observe and always keep a learning approach to any situation that is coming ahead. Especially in the initial days, the more a person keeps a child like approach with an open head, they would grasp all of these concepts and develop an out of the box thinking. Five managerial skills that I might consider average would be compulsion to meet deadlines, aversion to being average, opinionated, complying absolute orders. I feel to survive in these fields, there requires to be compliance with the team leader and obeying every order that they give without objecting too much, which I feel is missing in me. I do have a tendency to keep my opinions and places where I feel I’m correct, but that may sometimes be a problem. Hence, with changing roles, I would have to learn to comply with higher authority more often. Some of the fields I might be weak is something that I haven’t yet identified. Maybe as time moves and more projects are handed over, I would realise my weak points.
