Explanation / Answer
Since the times of industrial revolution, there has been some drastic changes that have taken place everywhere in the world, in most of the aspects. With its effect on economy, there has been changes in lifestyle and even economy and these changes in the economy has led to changes in the family structure. Initially, the family structure was composed of joint families, large in structure, such that parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, all would be living together. A composite family sharing and caring every aspect of their life, was the initial structure. But with changes in economy, there had been a heavy impact on the family structure as well.
The economy had hit the family structures such that large families could not be supported anymore. There was a sudden rise in the cost of economy. This rise in cost of economy, with a decrease in the number of earning people, making it more difficult to maintain larger families, and carry out living in a way, that was not fulfilling the living criteria. Along with this, people began to focus more on careers, and this reduced their focus on families. Greater number of people want to spend more resources on their children, bringing them up and focusing on their education. Moreover, the increase in education cost and with rise in living standards, additional costs have also started to put pressure on the earning person, if they would want to keep up with a good life. Hence, the paradigm shift from larger joint families to smaller nuclear families.
Though there have been such shifts, there are shifts expected in the thinking and working of people and these children. For a long time it has been observed that children who have been brought up in nuclear families have been more successful in their time, because of the greater amount of nurture and attention, plus the amount of dedication given by the parents to the children in their studies and bringing up, has led the children to be more ready and more competitive for the world that asks for greater dedication and greater readiness.
These children want to be more successful, they develop greater career orientation than the children of the earlier generation. Though, there is a great change in the mindset of these people. They do not have family and culture dedication as much as their parents or other children who may have faced or been brought up in a more integrated environment. Also, these children may not be as adaptable as the other children, since the concept of adaptability according to relatives and environment may not have been inculcated. Also, they might be more blunt or may not have as much empathy towards older parents, when they might not have interacted with them much.
Yes, there have been pros and cons of this new family setting, as there are pros and cons of every thing in the world. Though, with the changing environment and the changing times, this setting has to be ideal, as the world today does not allow so much liberty to be emotional and family oriented.
