Question
I need help summarizing this article about operant conditioning in honey bees. I am alittle confused on what actually going on and how they are studying it. It only needs to be half a page as long as it has what the author is studying, how they are studying it and their hypothesis, and alittle bit about the how many honey bees were used, like control/experimental group.. but don't need to go into too much details about the method that was done. And than compare this study to skinner operant conditioning on pigeons. This is the URL to the honey bee article from google scholar. https://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&as_sdt=0%2C22&q=Operant+Conditioning+in+Honey+Bees+%28Apis+mellifera+L.%29%3A+The+Cap+Pushing+Response&btnG=
Explanation / Answer
AIM: To use the CPR (Cap Pushing Response) to test the difference in different learning curves between novel auto-shaping and more traditional explicit-shaping.
The CPR protocol required the bees to exhibit a new behavior of pushing a cap to uncover a food source. A total of 55 bees were used, with each bee given 20 trials, for 3 different experiments:
RESULT/CONCLUSION: According to test conclusions the learning ceased rather than continuing to that of maximum efficiency. The rate of learning was different for each group of bees. While, the shaped bees had the rate of learning 3 times as fast to that of control group, the auto-shaped bees showed one-trial learning (change in behavior that occurs with just one powerful experience). The result also proved that the bees were capable of developing the tactic of CPR both with or without shaping. The results from control group and explicit-shaping group led to the study of auto-shaping experiment. In auto-shaping experiment bees were shaped to CPR without the experimenter shaping this behavior. Bees developed this behavior on their own
This experiment is similar to Skinner's operant conditioning on pigeons. In this experiment the bees were taught to use CPR to gain access to food. So, every time the bees wanted food they had to push the cap to gain access to feeding well. In the same way Skinner conditioned his pigeons to do certain actions to receive food. The pigeons had to turn (his first experiment), or bow, or do any action (superstition of pigeon) to get food. In both conditioning the food is the reward or reinforcement for doing a certain behavior. This type of conditioning is called as operant conditioning.
