What impact does socioeconomic class have upon language development
The two theories of language acquisition can be explained bye
- behaviourist approach: the behaviourist perspective stated that language is learned just like any other behaviour is acquired. This theory was given by B.F Skinner which states that behaviour is acquired through operant conditioning. When the child is encouraged as he would make certain sounds, he feels like making the same wound again would give him the same response.
- interactionist perspective: this states that the ability to acquire language depends on a person’s ability to interact with the environment . This means that the child’s attempt towards a language is either welcomed or reacted against and depending on their reaction, the child develops his language.
Socioeconomic status is the class in which an individual is living or staying which is an amalgamation of his education, occupation and income.
Since, in both of the above theories, the theorists believe that acquisition of language is a process by interaction with the environment and exposure to vocabulary, what the child hears, he would try to imitate and produce. So depending upon the type of words the caregiver is using, the child would try to produce. It has been observed that children who are born into families with lower socioeconomic economic status tend to fall back on the language front, in reading or conversations because, there might be a fall back on the discipline front by these parents, and they might lack appropriate communication with their children . This in turn hampers the parenting quality and subsequently language development. If the child is not frequently encountered with computers or availability of books , this would also result in an effect on cognitive stimulation by the environment and the child might not get the correct exposure that would develop his language or even build his vocabulary. Also, it has beenobserved that parents who have lesser income, do not believe in too much communication or talking with the child and most of their communication is in regard to some instruction. Also, if some mothers are suffering from depression after child birth, it might directly affect the child’s development. .
