1. Select one chronic quality related problem that you have encountered (if you prefer, you may choose the latest GM/Toyota/xxxx recalls): a. Write a brief problem statement. b. Write a mission statement for a quality improvement team. c. What data could be collected to prove the need to address the problem? d. What department should be represented on the team? e. State one or more symptoms of the problem. f. State at least three theories for the cause(s). g. Select one theory. What data or other information is needed to test the h. i. j. theory? Assume the data show that your selected theory is the true cause. State a remedy to remove the cause. What forms of resistance to the proposed remedy are you likely to encounter, and how will you deal with this resistance to change? What methods should be instituted not to repeat this quality issue? Attach all reference materials supporting the quality problemExplanation / Answer
Let’s choose the incident for Ford Motors. In the recent news (last 1-2 day) Ford has recalled over 1.4 million cars from USA Canada and Mexico. The models that were recalled are Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ. (You could look this up on the news for more information) The reason behind the recall is the possibility that the steering wheel may detach from the car.
a) The steering wheel of Ford Fusion and Ford Lincoln MKZ has a potential risk of coming loose and causing accidents amounting to injury or death for the driver and passengers.
b) To help the organization improve vehicle quality by assessing performance, security, safety of Ford vehicles and eventually meet or exceed customer expectations on those parameters.
c) The following data could provide the need to address the problem
d) In addition to the quality management, risk management team should also be represented on the team.
e) After some use of the vehicle, the steering wheel becomes loose from the rest of the steering assembly.
f) Three possible theories for the cause could be
g) Let's select "Poor materials used". We need to check the core material that makes the steering wheel assembly. Then compare the strength and durability of the material against the other models that does not have the problem. If we notice a difference between the two materials, test the materials in simulation to check the strength and weakness of the materials
h) If the theory is correct, then the existing steering wheel assembly must be immediately replaced by the other material in order to bring a homogenous quality.
i) The proposed remedy may have resistance from vendor management team or the manufacturing team who may claim that the material used is as per the specified quality.
j) To avoid this problem in the futures, the quality improvement team must include check of the materials (in case of the theory being correct) and their strength.
