Explanation / Answer

Trasference is may be defined as the Emotions,Behaviours and feelings that the client brings into the therapuetic relationship based on his previous life experiences.

A similar thing can occur from the therapists side which is called Countertransfernce. As a therapist it is important for us to understand both and try to make use of them in therapy as it can impact therapy in both positive and negative ways. Here are a few examples to help you understand transference and its effects :

Example 1 : A client Showing transference may dislike you if you recieve phone calls during therapy saying " your just like my dad who never gave me time ". Such a client may not listen to your advice and may discontinue with you.

Example 2 : A client may feel that your a good therapist if you have a french beard just because someone with a french beard was good to him.

Example 3 : A client much older to you but not having a child, may treat you like one,may tell you everything easily and may end up relying more on you. Alternatively the client may not turn up again if he feels your too young to give him therapy. Its important to tell such clients prudently that age does not go hand in hand with expertise

Example 4 : A client of opposite sex may be more interested in listening to you than that of the same sex if you spend more time with the former. He/She may spend more time and schedule more appointments with you.

So its important to understand whether the client is showing transference or not when he/she behaves in a particular manner. As a therapist its important to analyze the transference and has been traditionally used by Freud in Psychoanalysis.Sometimes its very evident as quoted in Example 1 and clients conflicts can be resolved easily.

You can also use your clients transferential attitude in building up rapport with the client.
