Explanation / Answer
Provide an example from the video that helped you reach your definition
Perception is something that our brain develops as a mechanism in order to view things, based on certain trustworthy sources. These trustworthy sources can be in the form of past experiences developing fool proof methods, one of those are shadows, in the present where there may be presence of a single light source. Also, colour has been taken as one of the mechanisms to deduce things. This was explained by the example of the two boxes, which were if the same colour but appeared different because of the illusion of shadow created by the area dividing the two boxes. Our brain somehow trusts these mechanisms. Shadows are hugely affected by the source of colour, which are brain fails to acknowledge. Hence, whatever the brain deduces is through past experiences and our past experiences make up our perceptions.
Thinking about how perception works, how do we apply this when interacting with others?
While interacting with others, perception acts as one of the major players. Our thoughts about a person is influenced by what thoughts have been constructed in our mind about that particular person. These thoughts may be from past experiences, own experiences with that person, or the constant experiences that a third party might share with us, about that particular person. Our thoughts are constantly influenced by stories that we have heard about that person. Our mind fails to recognise that the same person might have changed. Our pre conceived notions about a person shapes our attitudes towards him, and this affects the way we think about that person or this affects our trust developed on that person.
What are some things you can do to check the accuracy of your perceptions?
In order to check the our perceptions, we need to look at the same thing in a different light. This is both literally and figuratively true. As in the video, where the person placed the cube in another light and realised that both colours are same. In order to Check the accuracy of our perceptions from time to time, we need to look at the same person, thing from a different angle, and this might reshape our thoughts about the same person or about a thing.
Briefly discuss how your perception of someone was wrong and how it changed?
My perception about a person was wrong as it got influenced by people's experience about one of my colleagues, though I didn't have much interaction with him. This changed as I started conversing with the same person, realising that the stories that circulated were people's version added with spices. I realised that it is important that it is better to know people ourselves rather than create notions that are not influences by personal interactions. Also, it is important to keep third party perceptions aside.
