The Republican Party when initially constituted, had the former members of various parties sich as the Free soil party, the Democratic party and the Whig party. These forces joined together into the Republican party to fight against slavery. This was their main political platform.
The Republican party's main aim was to abolish slavery. The party was against the Kansas–Nebraska Act. This was made possible when the first elected President - Abraham Lincoln from their party came to power. This party is associated with the laissez-faire capitalism, introduction of low taxes, protective tariff policies, development of factories, the bimetalism, extensive foreign policies, expansion of railways, setting up and expansion of banks, introduction of Gold Standard, and conservative social policies.
