When a stressful event occurs, there is an increase in the heart rate, due to higher pounding. There is an increase In muscle tension and appearance of beads.This response is known as flight or fight response. The flight or fight response is a survival mechanism, that enable the humans to enact in these life threatening situations. When a stress stimuli is confronted, the amygdala would interpret sound and images and would end a signal of distress to hypothalamus. The hypothalamus communicates with the body via the autonomic nervous system. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary functions like breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, as well as dilation and constriction. The sympathetic as well as parasympathetic nervous system work simultaneously. The flight and fight response is stimulated by the nervous system whereas rest and digest after the sympathetic nervous system excites the senses.

The signals go from the sympathetic nervous system to the autonomic nervous from adrenal glands. The epinephrine is pumped into the bloodstream. As adrenaline/epinephrine moves in the body, it arises physiological changes such as pushing blood in muscles, faster heart beat, increase in blood pressure and pulse rate. Extra oxygen goes in the brain with an increase in alertness. Sight and other basic senses become sharp than usual and nutrients are pumped into blood stream.

After epinephrine, the second stress response is activated through the HPA axis. The CRH is released, relieving the adrenocorticotrpic hormone, keeping the body high. As stress lowers, cortisol falls, lowering stress response.

The chemical messengers that transmit neural messengers across synapses are known as neurotransmitters. The endocrine system has the endocrine glands that secrete hormones in the blood stream. Hormones are responsible for stimulating changes in the body. Hormones not only affect the body, but also affect emotions and behaviour of a person. Hormone induced behavioural patterns are: parental care, circadian rhythms and territorial behaviours. The nervous system and the hormones, together affect and communicate with the body and affect body functions, influencing emotions, behaviours, etc.

The brain can be used to study the various functions of the body. If there are any abnormalities observed in a person, they can easily be studied using the brain. Most humans have a similar brain structure, though not exactly same. These structures are composed of complex network of modules that work in association such that the behaviour of a person is created. The structure of brain can be studied using techniques such as MRI, CT SCANS and PET SCAN. The radiologists are then able to map the brain structures to notice if any abnormalities are there in the structure. These abnormalities can then be correlated to the person, under research, who is displaying those abnormal behaviours.

They showed that traits are divided equally also, diseases are divided equally between the two. They also showed that nurture is of essential importance. They showed that environmental factors largely influence the traits. Even in bipolar disorder, 30% contribution was from environmental factors.
