Texarkana Moonlight Murders
In 1946, Texarkana, Texas, and Texarkana, Arkansas, had its only serial murder. The perpetrator attacked on weekends at night and nearly always killed 3 weeks apart. During this period, 5 people were killed and 3 more injured.
The first victims, Mary Jeanne Larey and Jimmy Hollis, described the attacker as a 6-foot-tall man that wore a plain white sack over his head with holes for the eyes and mouth. The only other victim that survived did not see the killer, so they could not verify if the killer wore a mask during the attack.
The killer used a .32 caliber pistol.
Sheriff William Presley told the press after one of the murders, “This killer is the luckiest person I have ever known. No one sees him, hears him in time, or can identify him in any way.”
The press dubbed the attacker the Phantom Killer.
