Question
Recently, a tremendous emphasis has been placed on social re-engineering of certain risk behaviors for cardiovascular diseases. Identify and describe one of these social experiments. Explain how this has been effective (or ineffective) in changing people's behavior. You should use information from reliable websites to support your view concerning the changes (be sure to cite where you obtained your numbers). Why is it difficult for society to engineer behavioral changes in large segments of our society?
Explanation / Answer
Recently, a tremendous emphasis has been placed on social re-engineering of certain risk behaviors for cardiovascular diseases. Identify and describe one of these social experiments.
Social re engineering is where people are manipulated at large scale. One of the social experiments to check the same is "Sleep Duration and Cardiovascular Disease Risk: Epidemiologic and Experimental Evidence" in which it has been shown how sleep affects cardiovascular disease risk. Increasing risk has been seen in people who are not taking adequate sleep. Also, people having sleep of higher or lower than 7-8 hours, with a "pooled relative disease risk of 1.48 (1.22–1.80) for short sleepers and 1.38 (1.15–1.66) for long sleepers".
Also, the prevalence of hypertension for "(<6 hours/night: 32.4%; 10 hours/night: 32.5%) compared to the referent category (8 hours/night, 23.2%)".
This study has affected people by making them realise how adequate amount of sleep is required in avoiding most of the diseases.
It is difficult to employ such changes on a large scale since there are various types of people who carry out various professions, with varying working hours and this is why this can't be employed on a large scale.
