In a feature search, the target is well defined and unique. Thus it can be distinguished among serious distractions. While in a connection search, the target is a combination of more than one aspect to define its characteristics.
If the distraction load increases the response time for a feature search remains the same but the response time for a conjunction search increases with the increase of distractions. Because in a conjunction search, with the increase in distractions the time required to scan and process information to combine the required criteria also increases. The target to be selected does not pop out amongst the distraction as in the case of a feature search.
For eg. In a box of chocolates, if the person selects the required chocolates only on the basis of the color of wrapper it is a feature search. However segregating and selecting on basis of wrapper color as well as the required flavor, is a conjuction search. This is because the selection criteria of wrapper color is in combination with the flavor of chocolate.
