Explanation / Answer

A. Moral development is a crucial aspect of human development. With having a proper sense of morality, an individual is not only helpful to the fellow beings but also to the society in general. Moral development starts from infancy and continues till adulthood. This means that moral understanding emerges, changes and gets modified from the infancy to adulthood. How moral an individual will be is shaped by a number of factors. There are familial, societal, cultural and political factors which influence the moral development of an individual. The role of peers, family members, conscience and values and socialization cannot be overlooked when we talk about moral development.

Children’s moral development is found to be influenced by the type of interactions they have with their significant others. These social interactions help them to build an understanding of the difference between ethical and unethical behavior.

There are theories by Piaget and Kohlberg on moral development. They both have said that during infancy and childhood, morality is developed as a response to what the significant others tell about something or the other. During the later years of life, the individual decides on his/her own what is right and what is wrong. These decisions are influenced by socio-cultural dictums as well.

B. Over the passage of time, I have realize that morality is subjective in nature, what is right and ethical for me may not be the same for you. But in my opinion, any behavior which has consequences for the larger good is moral. If I tell a lie, but it is for the betterment of other person, I would not consider it as immoral or unethical.

Overall, it may be concluded that there are influences of others in our moral understanding yet after attaining maturity, the individual himself/herself is responsible for ethical or unethical behavior.
