Question
Hoffner & Levine (2005) provide a meta-analysis of research investigating factors that lead to an individual’s enjoyment of frightening and violent media. The authors describe several theoretical models that attempt to explain and predict enjoyment in horror films. Describe the model’s of both Zillman & Tamborini. What do these two authors propose is the key to predicting enjoyment of frightening media? Hoffner & Levine (2005) note the importance of negative affect in horror film enjoyment. Describe negative affect experienced during the viewing of this week’s horror films. What scenes or images seemed to elicit this response? Did this negative experience add or detract from your enjoyment of the film?
Explanation / Answer
What do these two authors propose is the key to predicting enjoyment of frightening media?
They say that people who have lower empathy, which includes men, and some people who wanted higher sensations and wanted to seek more aggression, enjoyed violence and horror more.
Describe negative affect experienced during the viewing of this week’s horror films. What scenes or images seemed to elicit this response? Did this negative experience add or detract from your enjoyment of the film?
They explain that in horror movies when the hero or the main person is threatened or or victimised, there is an qrousal of empathic distress. The excitation transfer theory states that this enjoyment occur due to two effects, one in which there is negative arousal in the person where the person experiences fear or physiological arousal of distress. This response was elicited every time the main character would be tortured or threatened, as the suspense in a scene continue, there is increased arousal in the person, which is a positive reaction, as he reaches a satisfying resolution, and this in turn becomes an enjoyable experience. This negative experience would add to the response, as the affective reaction of the viewer would come only after the negative reaction is removed.
