Question
Daniel, a 20-year-old international student from China, is currently readying himself for midterms. Since the semester began, about 2 months ago, he has felt exhausted, and has been having increasing difficulty completing day-to-day tasks. Particularly frustrating is that Daniel cannot seem to fall asleep at night; he lies awake for hours thinking about what he has to do the next day while he tosses and turns in bed. He describes this scenario as happening about 4-5 nights each week. Daniel has become increasingly concerned with his lack of sleep, and its effects are starting to show in his grades, recently he received his first ever C on a paper for his Biology course. This is Daniel's second year in the U.S. but he has spent most of his time studying and has yet to make many friends. Daniel is typically quick to talk with his parents about his concerns, but has not yet disclosed the trouble with sleep because he feels it is his responsibility and he does not want to worry his parents. Now Daniel is concerned that he will not be able to achieve the grades his parents expect of him, and that they may question whether he should come back and pursue his studies closer to home.
Consider this case from a bio-psycho-social model: what factors need to be considered when working with Daniel? Based on the above information, do you believe Daniel qualifies for a diagnosis? What other information would help your diagnosis? Finally, describe two positive coping strategies that may be helpful for Daniel.
Explanation / Answer
The Bio-psycho-social model depicts that Daniel may be suffering from Major Depressive disorder(MDD) and Diagnosis and statistical manual of mental disorders (DSM) with parts-III,IV and V which clearly explains the symptoms of the disorder and well as the necessary conditions required for the maintenance of sanctity and peace in the environment and in the place of living. The case of Daniel reflects that he has inherent thinking and burder that his parents have invested a lot in his academics and sent him to one of most fine and refined academic and research countries respectively United States of America but the burden of studies and work load had let to his failure to cope in studies which is shown in his grades and marks shown as C for which he has to reappear for his examination subject schedules. This has further led to deterioration in his mental thinking, and he has developed anxiety and depression because of debts of money on his parents in his native country.
Daniel should consult a neuro-physician and psychiatrist who can counsel him about the ways to overcome anxiety and depression as well as he will prescribe him a dose of sedatives like diazepam, benzodiazepine, barbiturates which are anti-hallucinogenic with left impact on false visualizations nad artifact situations in the brain occuring due to excessive secretion of dopamine, acetylcholine and gamma amino butyric acid.Various neuro-inhibitor drugs will be given by doctor and he will be counselled to think less and talk with hi friends and colleagues and enjoy with them.He should refrain from sitting alone even if he has faced a bad situation of obtaining false marks or marks which should not have been provided to him or maybe he deserved C grade only.He should not yhink too much on that situation and discuss it with his friends. He should be careful because in worst cases it can led to homicide and suicide with bipolar syndrome, split personality and schizphrenia and hysteria.Further it cn lead to insomnia, this situation should be analysed by designing the factors responsible for the occurence of such behavior along with reality of occurence of such circumstance in near future and the validity of such false thinking with hallucinations.
The theory of Kuhn holds good under such circumstances which states that the observation and values of scientific output remains relevant only under very particular scientific scenarios and these results do not hold good in other scenarios.
Daniel should just believe that the academic tenure is just some theoretical statistical output which has no significance in events happening is real life and should enjoy life even if he obtains less grades as it may not hamper his job prospects so much.
