The conditioned infant head turn procedure is often used in studies of speech perception and language processing. Researches typically make use of 3-sided booth, with the child facing forwards while sitting on a parent’s lap in the center of the booth. The wall which the child faces starts to blink a light in the start of the experiment and it stops blinking when the child looks at it. Next, another light on either the left or right side of the child starts to blink. Speakers are installed at the back of these side walls such that when the child looks, a speech sample is presented. The sound will stop if the child turns away for a duration longer than 2-3 seconds. Hence, the length of the speech presented to the child will ultimately depend on how long the child will look at the light. When the sound from the left or right stops, the light in front of the child starts to blink again and the whole process is repeated. By continuously measuring the time spent listening to different speech samples, we can understand whether the child has a preference for one of them.
