You are a member of a management research committee responsible for administering projects in behavioral sciences at the university. You have been called to an emergency meeting because of a catastrophe happening with one of the committee's projects.

The project is a study of behavior in confined spaces and is being conducted in a remote location. Seven people have been living underground in a cave system for several days. The groups only outside contact is via radio link with a research until set up at the cave entrance. The volunteers in the cave have issues a call for help. A rock slide has blocked their way out, and water is rising, They expect it to fill the cave completely within 4-6 hours.


A rescue team familiar with the caves has said it will extremely difficult to get everyone out. With the equipment available and the conditions, only one person can be removed safely each hour. Your committee will decide the order of rescue. The only available information was found in project files o the leaders desk. In what order would you rescue the following people and why?

1. Helen- white female, American age 34, married, homemaker, four children, aged 7 months to 8 years. Husband is city council member, Was promising psychology student when she left university to marry. Lives in surburbs near university. Hobbies are ice skating and cooking. became involved in the volunteer project through associaiton with Owen, another volunteer. Project coordinator suspects Helen and Owen have developed a covert sexual relationship.

2. Tozo- Female, Japanese age 18. Single sociology student at State University. Parents lives in Tokyo. Father is wealthy industrialist and national authority on traditional Japanese mime theater. Outstandingly attracted, has dated several men from upper crust. Recently featured in TV documentary on Japanese women.

3. John- Black, male age 37. Married, five children, aged 6 years to 19 years. Campus coordinator of Catholic School Services at State University. Worked full time while attending school. Earned masters degree in social work. Heavily involved with black militant group for several years. Hobbies are camping and photography.

4. Owen- White, male, American age 45. Unmarried, physical education instructor at University High School. Served in Army right after high school, was infantry platoon leader in Iraq, earned several distingusted decorations. Medical discharge due to serious leg wound (recovery complete except for occasional pains) Earned masters in physical education, using GI Bill benefits. Life is bit unsettled, drinking problems. Hobbies: modifying and driving stock cars.

5. Paul- White, male, English age 47. Divorced (six years), no children. Medical research scientist at University Hospital. Recognized world authority on treatment of rabies. Currently testing a new experimental, low cost rabies treatment but much of his research data are still in working notebooks. Hobbies are classical music and sailing. Some emotional difficulty related to divorce and ex-wife recent remarriage, Twice convicted of indecent exposure. (last occasion was 11 months ago)

6. Edward- White male, American age 59. Married, two grown children, 7 grandchildren. GM of small factory (71 employees)nthat produce rubber belts for machines. Recently negotiated a large contract for his company, that if signed will create 85 new jobs for the company, Will complete details when he returns to work. Socially and politically active: senior freemason and city council member. Hobbies: spelunking. Plans to write a book on the subject when he retires.

7. Jean- Black, female, Jamaican age 72. Unmarried no relatives. Living in US since 1979 but has not sought American citizenship. PHD in biological sciences. Working with a government grant to explore biological organisms that live in caves. Most recent work with tree organisms has led to development of experimental vaccine that could be the forerunner to an AIDS vaccine, Recent Peabody Award winner from Stanford University. Assignment in current project. Study the behavior of people in confined spaces and gather microbes for future medical research.
