Question

Dr. U. P. Straight is a developmental psychologist who loves his work. One area of interest for him is toilet training because parents always ask how to do it faster and neater. He was out at a restaurant sitting next to a table of six male toddlers and became fascinated as the boys made targets out of everything. It got him to thinking about the boys and whether he could use their liking of targets to speed up toilet training.

He decided to set up an experiment. He enlisted 10 daycare centers that agreed to participate. He wrote letters to parents asking if they would allow their boys to be participants in his study. (He only used males since female toddlers do not seem to have the same interest in hitting targets.) A number of parents agreed to participate, so he put their names in a hat and assigned them to two different groups – one group received instructions to throw Cheerios in the toilet for the boys to aim at. The other group did not use targets and just did normal toilet training with the boys. Dr. Straight charted the average time it took for each group to become accident free, i.e., toilet trained. He was delighted to find that the Cheerio boys were trained in half the time.

A. What is Dr. Straight's hypothesis?

B What is the independent variable in this study?

C.What is the control group in this experiment?

Explanation / Answer

B: The independent variable in this study is: throwing Cheerios in the toilet for the boys to aim at i.e. hitting targets by boys.

C. The control group in this experiment is the normal toilet training by a group of boys who are not using targets.
