1. Over the course of the first section of our class the position of Europe vis-à-vis the rest of the globe changed dramatically. In 1200, Europe was one of the poorest and most isolated regions on the Eurasian landmass but five hundred years later, the nations of Western Europe had become the key players in global commerce and significant world powers. Why did this transition occur? What, in your opinion, were the major factors that allowed Europe to become a dominant force in world trade and geopolitics?

Explanation / Answer

In his book, Kenneth Pomeranz used a term ‘Great Divergence’ to refer to the growth of Europe post 1200 AD. Europe emerged as a flag bearer of pre-modern growth restrictions and emerged as a successful nation. It became the most powerful and wealthy nation bypassing other world civilizations like, Mughals, China etc. There are a number of reasons for Europe’s emergence as a wealthy nation. They indulged in colonialism, where they harnessed the resources of their colonies. Technological advances like, construction of railroad tracks, steamboats, mining and agriculture made Europe march ahead of the rest of the world. Europe had more free and efficient markets than other civilizations. Europeans were innovative too, they came up with a number of creative trade ideas which they could successfully implement and harness the resources of their colonies.

Overall, it may be summed up that because of a well thought and executed strategy, Europe could emerge asa super power after 1200 AD.
