Question

For the session on The Role of Biology in Psychology, you have read Chapter 2, focusing on the brain and the entire nervous system. You have learned how the individual neurons communicate with each other and how the nervous system interacts with the endocrine system. One of the parts of the nervous system you have learned about is the autonomic nervous system (ANS) which includes the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS).

Please describe an event you have experienced in your life that has triggered responses from the two parts that make up the ANS. Briefly explain the situation you experienced, including how you felt at the time. Please make sure to highlight your body's specific responses. You can review figure 2.22 in the textbook (see below) as a resource for the types of responses your body normally produces when each of these systems is triggered. Please provide clear and elaborate responses.

The sympathetic division of the nervous system prepares the body for action. The parasympathetic division returns the body to a resting state. Eyes Pupils dilate. Pupils contract. Lungs Respiration increases. Respiration decreases. Heart Heart rate increases. Heart rate decreases Stomach, intestines Digestion decreases. Digestion increases. Figure 2.22 Copyright © 2017 W. W. Explanation / Answer

I was walking in the park outside my house and suddenly a dog came infront of me . I am bery scared of dogs because in my childhood i was attacked by a dog . So when I saw the dog I started sweating , there were cramps in my stomach , my heartbeat increased , i got very anxious amd so i decided to run away back to my home . I ran away frim the dog amd safely reached home . Then gradually my heart beat became normal , sweat disappeared amd i felt normal .

During the time of emergency i.e. when I saw the dog my sympathetic nervous system got activated and so my body started dispalyimg reactions like imcrease in heartrate , sweating etc. The activation of sympathetic system helps us decide between fight or flight response i.e. either we fight back or run away from danger .

After I came back home I felt normal because my parasympathetic nervous sustem got activated . It helos us calm down as soon as the danger element passes away . It helps our body return back to normal state.
