Answer: The week’ topic field focuses upon the health effects of Yoga (particularly asanas –physical posture) practices in overcoming the subjectively reported symptoms of depression and mood as well as objective tests based upon morning cortisol level. The experimental design used for this investigation was randomized case-control study. The study used a sample 28 volunteers who experiencing mild depression but had taken any psychiatric treatment and neither had any of them any yoga experience. The study randomly assigned the 28 participants into two groups to either yoga group or wait-list group. The yoga group underwent two hour per week classes in Iyengar Yoga course that included specially chosen postures relevant for depression. The wait list group did practice any yoga exercises and were engaged in their routine activities. The symptoms were measured using Beck Inventory (BDI), Speilberger Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Profile of Mood States (POMS), and Cortisol samples collected via plastic salivettes. The results showed that at the end of course Yoga group showed significant improvement in their subjectively reported symptoms of depression as well as increased morning cortisol levels however there was no significant change in the waitlist group. This small study provide strong evidence for the efficacy of Yoga in mild depression and supports/justifies undertaking of larger and more complex studies in the filed.
