Determining behavior to communicate effectively - study of DiSC tool.
DiSC is a behavioral assessment which is based on William Moulton Marston's DISC theory. DiSC theory is developed in behavioral assessment tool by Walter Vernon Clarke. Here, four different behavioral traits such as dominance, inducement, submission, and compliance are used to identify the individual's personality/behavior types - dominant type, influential type, steadiness type, conscientiousness type. Identifying behavioral types/categorization helps in determining particular individual's behavior in given environment and communication with other types of individuals within the group. Effective communication can be possible by knowing the behavioral traits of the individual and having knowledge how to talk/approach individual in particular situation.
There may be solid personality type which is high on particular type. Example: High D, high I, high S, high C. Also, there may be combination of personality type like DC, IS, etc. The test will act as tool to determine which type individual's trait belongs to. Let us understand what this D, I, S, C are meant with regard to behavioral traits and how to communicate with them effectively:
High D: This type is characterized as high on dominance. Here, this category individual is highly motivated to accept the challenge, wants to work independently, and least bothers about consequences affecting other associated people. These individuals are demanding and go getter in nature, and concentrates on results rather than reasons. While communicating with this kind of individuals, more emphasis to be given to narrowed concept and expected result or outcome. Explaining briefly and communicating the goal given importance rather than explaining in detail.
High I: These individual's are influential in nature. They prefer to control the environment and situation. These people are usually enthusiastic to take new assignments, persuading others to help them to achieve new heights, feels high through recognition. They do planning and execution in superficial way, but collaborate with others to go in depth and execute successfully. They usually fears loss of their influence over others. They can be good counselors. While communicating with this type of individuals, priority to be given to crisp and brief explanations, allowing them to clarify doubts rather than explaining everything, maintain positive communication to avoid loss of motivation.
High S: These individuals are high on steadiness and cooperation. These individuals are good at collaborating, supporting, and maintaining stability. They are predictable, stable, and consistent in their actions. Usually, these individuals give importance to stability at work or life and fears changes. Communication in aggressive manner and confronting them to be avoided. While communicating with this type individuals, priority to be given to address them personally with warmth and affection.
High C: The individuals who are high on conscientiousness give importance to quality of their work. They always respect knowledge, expertise. They are usually systematic and tactful in their approach. Their approach is predictable and stable. Individuals of this type are diplomatic in nature and communicate in cautious manner. While communicating with these individuals, should avoid being overcritical as they do not like criticism. Emphasis to facts and numbers to be given while communicating with these individuals.
Let us examine how communication can be effective and better when High C individual communicates with other category individuals. Below are some points provided as to ensure better and effective communication between High C and other categories.
High C communicating with High D: Importance to bottom line to be given such as quality of the outcome, result, etc. High C must avoid talking more on methods and process as this might hinder the effective communication.
High C communicating with High I: Here, High C can be diplomatic while communicating and share their real life experiences. Allow the High I individual to ask questions and gather information (more interactive approach) rather communicating in one-way. The interactive communication avoids overloading High I individual with unnecessary details. Communication with appreciation to their previous achievements and recognizing their effort will result in good rapport and effective listening.
High C communicating with High S: The individual with High S are supportive and cooperative in nature. High C can communicate with these individuals in positive manner. Communication enhancing the feel of stability will be effective. Diplomatic communication of high C will result in avoiding aggressiveness.
