Explanation / Answer

Appreciation of music:

The ability to listen to music with a focused mind can be said as "appreciation of music". Listening music, not just hearing it superficialy as we do in a shopping mall, will help you to concentrate on many aspects of the music. We cannot appreciate fully a Beethoven string quartet with the distraction by a television sound in the adjoining room. When you listen to Beethoven, you cannot allow the song of rock group Franz Ferdinand, that would be a futile exercise.

If you become aware of some of the elements of music, you will appreciate it more. The following are the basic elements of musical language, and we can call them as the building blocks of music.

Tempo - This is the speed of the music

Pitch - This is the way in which notes appear high or low in relation to one another

Rhythm - This is the length of certain notes, from short to long

Melody - This is the 'tune', created by combining rhythm and pitch

Harmony - This comes when different pitches are played together at the same time to form chords

Texture - This is the way in which different lines of music interweave

Timbre -This is the sound quality of different voices and instruments

Dynamics - This is the different levels of volume, from soft to loud

Some of these terms would be familiar to you already, but the important thing is not to be intimidated by them. The good news is that you don't need to be able to read or play music in order to appreciate it. You have to also understand that these elements are common to all forms of music.

If you know how to listen to music, and how to appreciate it, then it means that you ARE ENJOYING it!
