Specifics, please. What do you do when your only means of communicating a complex issue is online? Do you take extra time with an email or text? What do you do?

One thing I find -- particularly with online communication -- is that rarely is there attention to needed depth. In other words, the writer assumes that the receiver knows all the background and will infer from what is said. Sometimes that does happen. Much of the time though, there is someone somewhere scratching his or her head, wondering how to respond.

What if, despite your bet effort, the receiver either reads something into the message that is not there or totally misses the point? How do you play clean-up on something like that? And can you ever really clean this up?
